Monalisa Q & A

What is the MonaLisa Touch?

The MonaLisa Touch (Deka SmartXide) is an innovative laser designed to counteract vaginal atrophy.  It promotes the proliferation of cells and the restoration of vaginal wall’s strength and blood supply.  It is a quick, in-office, non-surgical procedure to address the symptoms of menopause, vaginal dryness, and pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia).

What is vaginal atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy refers to the thinning, drying, and inflammation of the vaginal walls, which is caused by a lack of estrogen in your body. This most often occurs during menopause, but it can also occur while breastfeeding, if you take medications that affect estrogen levels, or as a side effect of receiving treatment for certain kinds of cancer.

Over time, vaginal atrophy can lead to urinary incontinence. You may also notice vaginal dryness or pain during intercourse.

How does the MonaLisa Touch work?

The MonaLisa Touch laser targets the vaginal lining to encourage collagen production and blood flow. By making tiny abrasions in the tissue — abrasions so small you won’t even see or feel them — the laser encourages your body to create new blood vessels and collagen.

These blood vessels increase the vaginal walls’ ability to regenerate tissue and regulate pH levels to prevent dryness, while collagen helps tissue retain its natural shape and elasticity.  This process also contributes to improvement in sexual pleasure.

What happens during a MonaLisa Touch procedure?

The procedure is quick and painless. When you arrive, you’ll sit on a comfortable exam table, just as you would for a pelvic exam. Most women only notice a slight tingling sensation. Your provider inserts a small laser into the vagina, and the laser then treats the vaginal walls.

The procedure usually only takes a few minutes.  You should begin to see the positive effects of your treatment about 30 days after your first visit, as the vaginal walls become more supple and well lubricated.  Many women reported even greater improvement after the second and third session.
